December 2011

12/7/11 - The Community Meeting that was scheduled for tonight at the high school as part of the New York Power Authority's (NYPA) re-licensing application has been canceled. It will be rescheduled.

12/6/11 - The Boys' Basketball teams are having an inter-squad scrimmage at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7 in the HS gym. Spectators are welcomed and are asked to bring one non-perishable food item to donate to local food pantries.

12/1/11 - The NYS Public Relations Association has recognized Middleburgh's website with an Award of Excellence. MORE

 

November 2011

11/29/11 - “Music of the Knight”, a choir of 13 select vocalists at Middleburgh High School, will be appearing on the television show “Music for the Holidays”, on WMHT-TV in December. MORE

11/29/11 - Terry Blanchfield, the retired assistant superintendent for administrative services at the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex (WSWHE) BOCES, has been named as the the school district's interim business administrator. MORE

11/15/11 - State and federal representatives heard from students and superintendents about the impact the devastating tropical storms two months ago will have on local school systems that were already facing challenges because of rising state mandates and the state's new property tax levy cap. 11/14/11 - The state Education Department has named the Middle School as a School in Need of Improvement (SINI) because students with disabilities failed to make "adequate yearly progress" as a group on the English Language Arts state tests they took in the spring. MORE

11/10/11 - Hundreds of students dressed in red, white and blue and dozens of veterans celebrated Veterans Day together in the elementary gymnasium during the annual Veterans Day Program. MORE

11/8/11 - Project Hope, which is funded by a grant from FEMA, is offering free support groups for community members. They begin tonight at the Middleburgh Fire Department. Check out the flyer. MORE PDF

11/7/11 - The first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. It will last for about three minutes. During that time, an audio message indicating that "This is just a test" will be broadcast simultaneously on most broadcast radio and television, cable television, satellite radio and television and video services. 11/3/11 - The Booster Club is selling hats, sweatshirts and other items during the Spirit Wear Sale. Orders must be placed by Wednesday, Nov. 23; delivery will be the week of Dec. 19. MORE

11/2/11 - Two months after tropical storms left a path of destruction throughout Schoharie County, the Middleburgh, Schoharie and Cobleskill-Richmondville school districts have joined together to create a program called Project Buoyancy to meet the mental health and psychosocial support needs of students, staff and parents living in the districts. It will be funded with a $90,790 AmeriCares Disaster Recovery Initiative Grant. MORE

10/26/11 - The boys soccer team is seeded #10 and travels to Mayfield (#7) for a 7 p.m. game under the lights tonight _- Wednesday, October 26. The girls team is seeded #5 and plays Albany Academy (#12) this Friday, October 28, at 3 p.m. at the Valley Soccer Fields. Thanks for the continued support.

10/24/11 - Congratulations to all the participants in the seventh annual pumpkin race. The overall winner was fifth-grader Alex Juhl. Pumpkins were generously donated by Stanton Farms and decorated by Elementary Art Club. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! MORE

10/17/11 - Students at the Capital Region's Career and Technical School's Schoharie Campus will fix small engine items - lawnmowers, generators, four-wheelers, snow blowers, etc. - that were damaged by flooding. MORE

10/12/11 - Members of the MCS a cappella group “Music of the Knight” have submitted a video in the GLEE "Give a Note" campaign to help fund music and arts programs in public schools. Help support the programs by voting for the video the group submitted. MORE

10/12/11 - The Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School's annual fall Open House will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Schoharie campus (174 State Route 30A, Schoharie). All are welcome.

10/6/11 - The Board of Education has adopted a revised school year calendar that trims the Thanksgiving and February Winter recesses and cancels a March 23 staff development day to recoup five days lost because of the late start of the year due to flooding. Here is the revised calendar PDF

September 2011

9/29/11 - Tax bills have been mailed to residents of the Middleburgh Central School District. The bills were late in going out because of the flooding at the Schoharie County Office Building. The Board of Education approved an adjustment to the payment period.
The bills are due without late fees by Monday, October 17. They may be paid at the NBT Bank, 299 Main St., Middleburgh. Payments will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

9/29/11 - A basketball game between the Capital District Sportscasters and WAC South Coaches will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Mekeel Christian Academy (formerly Schenectady Christian School) in Scotia. UPDATED: 9/15/11 - Staff returned today to hear an update on the damage caused at the school and try to return to a sense of normalcy for the 900 students who will return on Monday, September 19. MORE

August 2011

8/30/11- Volunteers Needed to help with cleanup at High School/Middle School building! There has been extensive damage to the following areas: Cafeteria, Distance Learning Room, Faculty room, all lower-floor tech rooms, gym and associated rooms, etc. It appears the first and second floors have not been compromised.

At this point, the full focus is on cleanup. Volunteers should check in at the command center in front of old bus garage. We respectfully request only those taking part in the lower level cleanup process to be on school grounds. Update to follow. All school activities canceled until further notice.

8/29/11 - Because of the State of Emergency in Middleburgh due to flooding, please refrain from going into school buildings or on school property until further notice. Our crews are working to ensure the buildings and property are ready for the start of school next Wednesday. Thank you!

8/26/11 - You may have received this notice (PDF) in the mail from the Empire Plan. This refers to the former insurance plan that covered Middleburgh employees when the district was part of a multi-school consortium of schools. The district now has its own identical plan with Empire which began on August 1 and has a different group number.

7/28/11 - Here are classroom supply lists for the 2011-12 school year. MORE

7/22/11 - The Board of Education has changed its August meeting schedule. The board will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, August 10 and 31, in the High School/Middle School library. The previous dates were August 3 and 17.

UPDATED 7/20/11 - Middleburgh's first Summer Learning Academy (SLA) is in full gear for the next six weeks this summer at the elementary and middle schools. The program ends August 12. MORE

7/6/11 - Kimberly Smith was re-elected as president of the Board of Education and Donald Wood was re-elected as vice president during the board's reorganizational meeting tonight. They have each been in their respective positions since September.

2010-11

June 2011

6/29/11 - The Middleburgh Board of Education today met to discuss plans to switch to a less-expensive employee health insurance company on July 1. Because the proposed provider does not have an agreement with the Bassett Healthcare Network, the primary local health care provider, the school district will not switch health insurance companies as planned but will move to a self-funded prescription plan as of Aug. 1. 6/29/11 - In order to make sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to speak at Board of Education meetings, participants are reminded that they must complete a form and submit it to the District Clerk. She can be reached at 827-3624 and her office FAX is 827-6632. The clerk is at the District Office, which is located at 168 Main Street in Middleburgh. 6/24/11 - Hundreds of parents, grandparents, siblings and friends packed the high school gym tonight for the Class of 2011 Commencement program, which featured musical and vocal selections and the usual pomp and circumstance that accompanies such milestones. MORE 

6/23/11 - No large production can go off without practice. That's exactly what the 57 members of the Class of 2011 did today - practiced and prepared for their graduation ceremony. It will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 24, at the high school gymnasium. MORE

6/8/11 - Superintendent of Schools Michele Weaver and Business Administrator Mark Wagner will head to the front lines and serve lunch on Thursday, June 9, to nearly 500 students at the Middle/High School. MORE

6/3/11- The 5th- 8th graders enjoyed the end of the year dance at the elementary school this past Friday. MORE

6/3/11 - Students in grades 8-11 learned a lot of life lessons during the MCS Awareness Day. The main feature was an inspirational discussion by John Robinson, a congenital amputee who has struggled for respect and tolerance his entire life. MORE

6/2/11 - The 11th annual Technopalooza Technology Expo and Cruise-In Car Show will be held from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, at Middleburgh High School, 291 Main Street, Middleburgh. 6/2/11 - Middleburgh High School Principal Lori Petrosino has announced the Class of 2011 Valedicatorian, Salutatorian and Honor Graduate. The Class of 2011's Commencement Exercises/Graduation will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 24, at the High School. MORE

5/17/11 - The proposed 2011-12 budget was approved by a 475 to 395 vote of the community and Kimberly Smith, Michael L. Fisher IV and Maurice "Kevin" Lawton were elected to terms on the Board of Education. MORE

5/13/11 - Mrs. Leith's reading group performed their version of Shakespeare's "MacBeth" for classmates and teachers on Monday, May 13th. MORE

5/13/11 - Middleburgh CSD joins the Schoharie and Cobleskill-Richmondville school districts as partners in a $200,000 state grant with SUNY Cobleskill that will allow high school students to attend college and earn up to 20 college credits before graduating from high school. MORE

5/10/11 - Freshmen Clayton Edmunds and Janson Hoeher, both students in Denise Colistra's Business and You class, entered the Dream Essay Challenge through Bryant and Stratton College and USA Today. They wrote essays describing their 'dream jobs.' MORE

5/4/11 - The Participation in Government class will host a Meet the Candidates night on Wednesday, May 11, at 6:00 p.m. in the High School/Middle School Library Information Center. This event will give the students and the community an opportunity to meet each of the candidates who are running for a seat on the Board of Education and to ask questions. MORE

5/4/11 - The public hearing on the 2011-12 budget proposal will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at the High School/Middle School Library Information Center. The budget calls for a maximum tax levy increase of 2 percent. MORE

4/26/11 - Qualified district residents who are unable to go to the polls on May 17 can cast their votes by absentee ballot. For an application, stop in at the district office or call District Clerk Deborah Manning at 827-3624.
If the ballot is to be mailed, the application for the ballot must be received by May 10. If the ballot is to be delivered in person, the application must be received by May 16.
All completed ballots must be received by the district clerk no later than 5 p.m. on May 17.

4/25/11 - Five community members have submitted petitions to run for three open seats on the Board of Education during the May 17 election and 2011-12 budget vote. MORE

4/13/11 - The Board of Education will consider the resignation of board member Thomas Gruning at its meeting tonight. Gruning, who is resigning for personal reasons, was elected in May 2010. 4/12/11- FLAME, a band from upstate New York made up of 10 people with developmental/physical disabilities, rocked the middle school. MORE

4/6/11 - If you have a child who will be four years old by December 1, he or she may be eligible to enroll in Pre-Kindergarten at the Elementary School in September. MORE

4/1/11 - The Kindergarten Parent Night is being held on Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. at the elementary school. Kindergarten Registration is June 9 and 10 by appointment. MORE

3/31/11 - The Board of Education tonight made additional budget reductions that brings the projected 2011-12 budget tax levy increase to 2.51 percent. The board is also offering a retirement incentive to school employees. MORE

3/5/11 - Students on eight teams from Middleburgh's elementary, middle and high schools faced off today in the Region 7 competition for Odyssey of the Mind, coordinated by the Capital Region BOCES. MORE
