Assessment Determined No Threat – School Back in Session Monday, June 6

Dear MCS Families,

First off, thank you for your understanding and cooperation regarding today’s unplanned school district closure. We chose to close the buildings out of an abundance of caution as there were many variables to sort out before bringing students and staff on campus.

This morning the administrative team and district cabinet, including myself, met with state and local police, first responders, and a BOCES health, safety and risk coordinator to discuss the issue we told you about last night.

After carefully reviewing the situation, a determination was made that there was no threat to any person, classroom or building. The matter escalated on social media when the person at issue started posting messages to the Middleburgh, NY Facebook page. The posts startled staff and community members and they reached out to me about the content. In response to multiple expressions of concern, I called the police and canceled school until we could be sure there was no threat.

School will be back in session on Monday, June 6. First thing on Monday morning, Principal Irwin and Principal Sloane will lead meetings to go over our safety protocols with all staff before students arrive. We have commitment from state troopers and the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Department to do daily checks of both school buildings every day for the remainder of the school year.

Please know that the safety and security of our students and staff remains our top priority. Our buildings are locked and secure. Video cameras are located on school grounds and inside the buildings. The district has a comprehensive safety plan. Staff are trained on how to respond to emergency events and practice drills throughout the school year.

It is our duty to be vigilant, and we promise you that. Please remind your children to remain aware of their surroundings and if they see something, say something. If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Sincerely,

Brian Dunn
Superintendent of Schools
