With his gloved hands precisely controlling the torch, Middleburgh student Wyatt Strobeck’s welding caught the attention of the judges at the March 18 SkillsUSA regional competition. His expertise at the event in Albany earned him a gold medal. He’ll be wielding the torch again in April when he advances to the state competition at the New York State Fairgrounds.

“This means a lot to me. I came here to do my best, and I did,” Wyatt said. “Hopefully, I can do it again at states.”

A total of 450 students from Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE), Questar III and other BOCES vied for top honors in areas including medical assisting, public speaking, and cooking. MCS students participated in the Criminal Justice–Crime Scene Investigation and Electrical Construction Wiring categories.

The competition is more than a chance to compete. It’s also an opportunity to connect with representatives of businesses, labor unions and government entities who were on hand to assist with the event and judge the competitors.

Wyatt is one of many Middleburgh students who are gaining real-world skills at CTE. This year, more than half of the Class of 2026 will graduate from a CTE program.
