Elementary Students SPY Something…

bulletin board with cluesThe I SPY display in the lobby area of the Elementary School was created by staff to give students something exciting to look forward to. Students are enthusiastic to check out the display case to find the daily challenge next to the magnifying glass.

Principal Irwin said, “It’s a HIT! Jolene Mensing and Lindsey Standhart have been spearheading this with help from Heather Howe as well.”

“We are so thankful for Mrs. Mensing coming up with the idea of the I SPY daily interactive display,” said Elementary School Counselor, Heather Howe. “It was so much fun to find things to add to it and help hang up things like the poster from our school Zones of Regulation program, letters and numbers to identify, popular characters like Ironman and Shopkins, felt stickers in retro shapes like roller skates and milkshakes, and different learning tools like a ruler, crayons and markers,” Mrs. Howe said.

PE teacher Jolene Mensing thought that 2022 needed a schoolwide community activity. “I went on Pinterest and found the I SPY board. I mentioned the idea to some awesome co-workers and it was well received!! We all began to collect materials,” Mrs. Mensing said. “The students are enjoying finding the object which changes daily. Mrs. Standhart takes Tuesday and Thursdays and I do Monday, Wednesday and Fridays to print off the pictured object they are looking for that day.”

Kindergarten teacher Lindsey Standhart said that some students are quick to help their peers locate the daily item while others provide clues to guide them to it. “I enjoy walking out of my classroom to see students smiling and talking about the different items in the display case,” said Mrs. Standhart. “The items we collected cover a wide range of interests and common objects found within classrooms. For example, Pokémon cards, Mr. Sketch markers, legos, pop-it’s and more! The best part of all is that within the first few days, we already received different suggestions to enhance the I SPY experience,” she exclaimed! Mrs. Mensing added, “I enjoy hearing the students talk about how easy or hard it was to find! When students say it was easy, my response is …..I think I need more trinkets to glue in there next week then! The excitement and smiles make it all worth it!”
