Mountains and Museums and Endless Inspiration

It was newly retired art teacher Teresa Norfolk’s pleasure to spend her last week with MCS immersing in art and nature. Together with Spanish teacher Lisa Himme, they combined their expertise to create four days of summer exploration they called MOUNTAINS AND MUSEUMS.

Two days were spent hiking and enjoying the opportunity to explore the flora and fauna with fellow hikers. The other two days were spent visiting art museums. Several of the students had never been on a hike or in an art museum before this.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our students,” said Mrs Himme. “Those who accepted the hiking challenges had fun getting to know themselves and each other through the experience,” she said.  Mrs. Himme, an accomplished hiker, and Adirondack 46er provided the inspiration and encouragement for students, of all experience levels, to complete two Catskill high peaks.

“For many, they learned about their own mental strength as they pushed through the physical demands. We enjoyed nature’s offerings: trees that provided shade, breezes, small brooks to splash in, and spectacular views at the summit rewarded our efforts,” said Mrs. Himme.

These MCS Summer Enrichment activities are intended to boost educational opportunities for students that they have missed out on in the last few years due to the pandemic. At the end of the program one students said, “I wish we could do more of this, can we?”
