Mrs. Mollie Burgett gave her 9th grade living environment class five weeks to dig into the concepts, topics and vocabulary they covered this year with a project to compare and contrast the lives of local and non-local organisms. This assignment included an out of the box way to share the information they learned — with one stipulation — it could not be with their regular class. Students said they liked being able to work with people in other classes and how working with younger students helped them get creative.
It was the first time Mrs. Burgett attempted a true project-based learning assignment with her living environment class. “These students exceeded my expectations. I’m immensely proud of what they accomplished. They are capable of much more than what we give them credit for,” Mrs. Burgett said.
Over the span of the five weeks students set daily goals, researched, gave and received peer review, practiced presenting, and coordinated with cooperating teachers. The projects resulted in storybooks read to PreK classes, puppet shows given to 4th graders, an art installation, videos, a tadpole pond, a variety of games, and paper mâché.
