The Community

Middleburgh High School services a rural community with a population of approximately 2,500 people, which includes Middleburgh, Preston Hollow, Fultonham, Huntersland, Livingstonville, West Fulton, and Breakabeen. It is the only high school serving Middleburgh Central School District. The district is located in the mid-eastern portion of Schoharie County.

Our School District

Middleburgh High School is a public school that is comprised of grades 9-12, with approximately 200 students enrolled. The school is accredited by the New York State Department of Education and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

MCSD has been named a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) district by the New York State Department of Education. To qualify for CEP, over 60% of MSCD households meet the low-income threshold.

Curriculum

Grading: Final grades are calculated by averaging grades for all quarters and the final examinations. The highest grade given is 100, and the minimum passing grade is 65. Cumulative averages are not weighted.
GPA/Class Rank: Class rank is weighted. It is calculated as follows: 1.0 = local courses with no prerequisites; 1.03 = Regents-Level courses, as well as local courses with a prerequisite; 1.05 = college-level, AP, and honors courses. More than one student may have the same rank in class. Final rank is calculated after the 7th semester.

Advanced Diplomas

For an Advanced Regents Diploma, students are required to have at least 22 credits, including 4 English, 4 social studies, 3 math (Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2), 3 science (including 2 Regents Exams), 1 fine art, a half credit in health, 2 physical education, 3 foreign language (or a 5-unit sequence in fine arts or technology to supplant foreign language), and 1.5 elective credits, as well as passing a minimum of 7 required state Regents Exams.
For a Regents Diploma, students are required to have at least 22 credits, including 4 English, 4 social studies, 3 math, 3 science, 1 fine art, a half credit in health, 2 physical education, 1 foreign language and 3.5 elective credits, as well as passing a minimum of 5 required state Regents Exams.

Distinction

Continuing a trend, Middleburgh Central High School has again risen in the ranks of best high schools, according to a U.S. News report. MCS is now a top 10 school in the Capital Region.

The ranking is based on schools that have exceeded expectations in math, reading and science state assessments, excelled in college-level exams, and have high graduation rates, among other factors. According to U.S. News, nearly 25,000 public high schools were reviewed nationally.

Mindful Education

MCS students learn essential social-emotional resilience through a partnership with the PEAR (Partnerships in Education and Resiliency) Institute. These resiliencies include Action Orientation, Emotional Control, Assertiveness, Trust, Empathy, Reflection, Optimism, Perseverance, Motivation, and Relationship-Building. The PEAR model builds social-emotional strength that supports student success in school and in life.

College in the High School Courses

Given the small size of the school and range of programs, students may, at times, have to take a less rigorous course than that which they are eligible because of scheduling constraints. Program levels are:

Advanced Placement (5 courses) and University in the High School (7 courses)
Regents and 1 honors course; college preparatory level
Local Level; less rigorous, may be college preparatory

Students at MCS experience a dynamic blend of student-driven initiatives and opportunities for personal growth. Experiential learning encourages students to explore their interests and passions.
The student-run store fosters entrepreneurial skills, empowering students to learn the ins and outs of business firsthand.
The Youth as Leaders Club cultivates leadership skills based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, and the Future Business Leaders of America Club prepares students for success in the business world. Offerings such as American Legion Boys State and the High O’Brien Leadership Program offer unique chances for personal development and civic engagement.
The Future Farmers of America Club allows students to explore careers in agriculture.
